Fall – Decorating Your Front Door

It’s hard to imagine that fall is right around the corner, but many people have already started to think about fall decorating ideas…or at least we sure have! We’re kicking off our next idea series with Fall Front Door Decorating Ideas! We thought this would be the perfect place to start, since it is the first thing that guests will see when they come to visit. We’ve also taken the liberty of gathering some great ideas for the porch and even light fixtures outside of your house…as we like to call it, Curbside Appeal!

These days, you don’t have to stick with the run of the mill wreath for your door. People are getting creative and thinking of different, out of the box door decorations. That’s why we thought we’d feature some really fun fall swags for the door. Swags are great for any home, and they especially look great for if you have double doors. The first idea we’ve featured has everything you want and need in a fall door swag, and luckily for you we have everything you’ll need to recreate this particular look. We’ve got all the key pieces that make this swag so beautiful, lotus pods, cat tails, wheat and of course burlap ribbon! The second idea featured, is a mix of fall leaves, berries and pinecones. Add a burlap ribbon bow, or leave simple with out a bow. Either way your door will be all set for fall.

It’s always fun to decorate the outside of your house, from the door, to planters and even light fixtures! Well we have some really cute ideas that make outside decorating really simple and easy.

1. We love this idea because of it’s simplicity. Take some natural or silk vines or branches and hang it above the front door for a unique garland. Simply add some fall leaves to the branches/vines and that’s about all you need for this very natural look.

2. Another great idea that we loved was taking a fall berry wreath and laying it flat on top of a planter or container. This creates a decorative edge to the container where you can set a large pumpkin and you don’t really need much else.

3. Sinamay is a great tool for adding a lot of show to whatever you may be working on decorating. For instance light fixtures, some people have light fixtures at the front of their house on either sides of the door or garage. This would be a fun, easy and festive way to decorate those light fixtures for the holidays. Pick up some sinamay at DFC, bunch it up or make a bow and wire it onto the light fixtures outside of your home. Sinamay is fairly easy to work with and for the look that you will get, it is very inexpensive as well!

Back to School Part 2

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time. The kids are back and there are a lot of great ways to kick off the school year!

Some possible events your school/parent committee may be planning…

Carnival Themes

A big event that usually takes place in the fall is the school carnival! Parents and teachers work together to come up with a great event and there is usually a cute theme involved! Lisa’s own kid’s school recently did a Dr. Seuss theme for their carnival. They made tissue pom Lorax Trees lining the hallways, just like the ones pictured below! This theme is great because of it’s bright mix of colors and fun characters, as well as being educational and promoting reading!

Solid Colors: $18.99 – 400 sheets per package
Colors: Citrus Green, Red, White, Tropical (green, yellow, orange, pink & purple)
and Rainbow Pastel (Shades of yellow, pink & purple pastels)

Wildside Animal Print: $18.99 – 200 sheets per package

Another theme that would be great for a school carnival is a Candyland or just Candy theme. What kids don’t like candy? The ideas below feature giant lollipops made of balloons wrapped with cellophane on top of wooden dowels. Colorful paper plates wrapped up like candies in cellophane, you could also tie these with ribbons on the end too! And the last idea features styrofoam discs, wrapped in colored tissue paper and then covered with cellophane and stuck on a wooden dowel. These ideas are inexpensive, yet showy they would be great for any school budget and super fun for the kids!

12″ Latex Balloons: $8.49 – 100/bg

Clear Cellophane Rolls:
24″x100ft – $4.79
30″x100ft – $5.69
40″x100ft – $7.59

Foam Discs:

Cake Walk

We’ve gathered some great ideas for a Cake Walk or any sort of baked good contribution to your school’s carnival or event. Even if your school does not allow home baked goods, these are still really great ways to package store bought items and still give them that homemade look and feel. Package cupcakes individually in plastic cups and simply drop the cups into our cellophane bags, tie it up with some ribbon or tulle and your cupcakes will stand out among the rest of the baked goods on the table! Another spin on individually wrapped cupcakes is to use some of our curling ribbons, like in the second picture. A cute idea that makes this idea really unique is to add a fork poked inside of the cupcake with a tag or note! Next, you could package cookies, store bought even, rolled in cellophane and secured with ribbon on the ends! Simple, yet so much better than the regular store packaging! And the last idea is also for cupcakes, just a little more intricate. For this one, take two of the plastic cups and punch holes in the sides to match up. Then tie both sides with ribbon, like our 3/8″ pippin sheers and you’ve got a nice little container for cupcakes!

Cellophane Bags:
3.5″x7.75″ – $6.49 100/bx
4″x9″ – $7.29 100/bx
5.5″x12″ – $8.99 100/bx
6″x14.75″ – $11.69 100/bx

Curling Ribbon: $1.99 500yd roll

5/8″ Double Face Satin Ribbon: $8.99 50yd

Pippin Sheer Ribbon:
5/8″ $1.00 25yd
7/8″ $2.50 25yd

Silent Auction Gift Baskets

A lot of school events have silent auctions to raise money and a lot of times each class is responsible for a gift basket. A common way to put your basket together is to first come up with some sort of theme and once the basket is complete you are definitely going to need some cellophane to wrap it up and make it pretty with some ribbons and tulle! We’ve got tons of great quality cellophane in different lengths, colors and patterns and all at great prices too!

Clear Cellophane Rolls:
24″x100ft – $4.79
30″x100ft – $5.69
40″x100ft – $7.59
Note: We also carry bulk rolls of cellophane, see store for selection and pricing.

Colored Cellophane Rolls:
24″x100ft – $7.75

Back to School

Well the time has come, school is back in session. I’m sure most teachers have already finished decorating their classrooms, and made it very welcoming for their new students, but it’s never too late to add on or come up with new ideas to change it up in the next couple of months! There are plenty of seasonal themes and more that can be done and if you are anything like us, here at DFC, you love to switch it up when it comes to decorating! We’ve rounded up a few super cute ideas for the classroom or even the cafeteria! Some of these ideas could even be made and given as gifts from parent to teacher…there’s something for everyone here!

Ribbon Bordered Bulletin Boards & Sinamay in the Classroom…

Traditionally, teachers use the scalloped card stock boarders that you can find in any school supply store. But we’d like to suggest using ribbon as borders for your bulletin boards, whiteboards and more! It can be rolled up and used year after year, and they are easier to stored than the scalloped borders! Plus, with our huge ribbon selection, the possibilities for color combinations and themes are endless! Just like the picture above, we’ve got some really cute Halloween ribbons that would look great, and the kids will love!

We were also super excited to see the picture at the very top where a teacher used sinamay in the classroom! We always say that sinamay is great for events, parties, and decorating your home…but it is also great for the classroom! It’s a fun 3-dimensial border to frame your bulletin boards, or whiteboards. We use it exactly this way, in almost every display that we do! It’s so easy to use, just bunch and staple! It’s also easily stored for reuse year after year! We have several different colors to choose from, whether you have a classroom theme or you want to show your spirit with school colors!

Wax Tissue Paper…

This is definitely a staple in the classroom. From decorating boards and walls to art projects for the kiddos, you need tissue paper, right? Another cute idea we found for borders is to bunch some colorful tissue paper together and make the super cute border pictured above. It’s something different and it also has dimension to it. Tissue paper is inexpensive, so you don’t have to worry about storing it to save for next year. Click on the link below the pictures and there is even a tutorial on how to get different looks using tissue paper as borders! Super easy, and fun! And how about making some great tissue pom flowers, like the ones covering the cabinet in the picture above! Sooo cute! We love tissue poms, so of course we love this idea!

Our wax tissue packages are such a great deal!

A lot of teachers like to pick a theme for the school year and their classroom. A popular one is a Safari/Jungle theme…let’s face it, sometimes the classroom is definitely a jungle! We have some really great animal print ribbons, tissue paper and even flowers and leaves if you want to go all out with this theme! The tissue paper is great for making tissue poms to hang in your room and the ribbon can be used for just about anything!!

Over the summer, we received our first shipment of these amazing work wreaths for making adorable sinamay wreaths! Don’t know about you, but we’d love to having one of these cute school themed wreaths hanging on our door or in our classroom if we were teachers!! Well, if you’re a teacher or even a parent wanting to give a great teacher’s gift, you are definitely in luck! These cute wreaths are super easy to make and can be done in any color of sinamay that we carry! Come by the store to see the two Halloween wreaths that we’ve already done! Mercury Glass Trend
Mercury glass is very popular for wedding decorations, especially for decorating the table, such as accent candle holders and votives to floral arrangements. They look gorgeous with lit candles inside of them, giving off a romantic glow during the evening. During the day they are bright and beautiful, adding shine and sophistication to a wedding. The candle holder set that we carry would look beautiful holding white, or even silver, pillar candles of different heights. It would also look great with flowers arranged at the top, instead of using the traditional pillar candles!

1. Sheer Fabric Chair Ties

Using our Le Sheer Fabrics, drape the chairs for the ceremony or the reception. This is a good way to add color or cover chairs that may not completely match your look.

2. Criss-Cross Table Runners

Instead of laying out your table runners in the traditional fashion, why not try something different! This idea features a square shaped table with criss-crossed table runners that also double as place settings for each seat, as well. This really adds to the look and decor of the table and draws the eye to the center of the table and your centerpiece!

3. Tie Back and Embellish Fabrics with Flowers

Extend the look of your floral arrangements to the fabrics. Tie your fabrics back and embellish them with your wedding flowers. The idea featured above looks absolutely gorgeous using hydrangeas to embellish the fabrics used.

4. Create a Fabric Back Drop for a Dessert Table

This idea features narrow strips of sheer fabric tied to a rope, hanging as a back drop for the dessert table. Using our runner-shaped fabrics hanging side-by-side, gives the back drop a textured look, and it won’t look flat like a single piece of fabric for a back drop. It’s very pretty and could be done using just about any color.

Fabric and Lights

Our fabrics would look fabulous with lights twinkling behind them! Our flocked printed Le Sheers, or Glitter Le Sheers would look phenomenal with lights behind them!

Fabric Draped Frame

This idea features a frame draped with narrow pieces of fabric. It’s a very light, subtle look, dressed up with some more flowers and hanging glassware. This pictures shows the frame over the sweetheart table, but this could also be done for the altar or over a dessert bar.
